Godly PlayWhere: 2nd floor classrooms
When: 9:30 am each Sunday
Who: youth between the ages of 3
to 4 on September 1st
Godly Play is the product of a lifetime of research and practice by theologian, author
and educator the Rev. Dr. Jerome Berryman. It began with the proposition that children
have a natural sense of God and that what they lack is the appropriate language to help
them identify and express it so it can be explored and strengthened. The Godly Play
approach developed by Dr. Berryman teaches classical Christian language in a way that
does not block or distort the child’s authentic experience of God but enhances it so it can
contribute to the creative life of the child and the world. Godly Play teaches children the art
of using Christian language—parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action—helping
them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. This approach is quite different from the
traditional model in which the teacher tells the children what they need to know. The goal of Godly Play is to show how to be
open to the Holy Spirit, The Creator and the Redeemer all at once and all the time in every
place. To achieve this goal is to help children become deeply rooted as Christians and
yet at the same time use this powerful language and community to be open and creative. |

Middle School
Where: basement classrooms
When: 9:30 am each Sunday
Who: youth between the ages of
11
to 13 on September 1st
Making It Real and Relevant is both the curriculum and the focus for this class along with waffles, current movie clips and current music and lyrics. Rachel and Jon Anderson and Connie Hilliard prepare waffles served with syrup and scripture. The waffles absorb the syrup and the youth absorb the discussion about how Christians relate to each other.
The topic-based curriculum was designed for middle school youth because it is based in concrete thought processes. However, because the curriculums are open- ended enough for the class to control the direction of discussion, Sunday school programs are finding that these curriculums work with either age group and the lesson format allows youth, whether middle or high school, to address issues from where they are in their lives, mentally and emotionally.

High School
Where: basement classrooms
When: 9:30 am each Sunday
Who: youth between the ages of
14
to 17 on September 1st Alex and Sarah Eyssen and Brandon Logan welcome the youth with waffles and a new curriculum. Making It Real and Relevant provides opportunities for the youth to begin to make Christianity relevant in their Monday through Saturday lives.
The Lectionary- based format builds on one of the lectionary readings to be heard in the Sunday service that day (usually the New Testament or Gospel reading) while the topic-based uses Bible passages that support a topic youth explore for 3 to 4 weeks. Both curriculums have specially focused classes during the 5 sundays before Easter (Lent) and the 4 Sundays before Christmas (Advent). During these classes, students have the option of developing and carrying out a special service project of their choosing while they explore themes that are specific to the season of the church year. |
